To compare two things, line up their starts. Then see whose end goes further.
Look at the balance. The heavier pan goes down. The lighter pan goes up.
We can also measure with paper clips, hand spans or cups. These are non-standard units.
Put the clips end to end. No gaps. No overlaps.
