Percentages and fraction–decimal–percent conversion

Per cent means "out of a hundred". Use a hundred square and a 100% bar to see that a fraction, a decimal and a percentage are three names for one amount.

📖 Start here: read the steps of the “Lesson” in order (1, 2, 3 …) and answer each question. Then continue with “Practice”.

Guide

per cent means "out of 100". 16% is 16 out of 100: 16100, or 0.16.

A hundred square has 100 small squares. Each one is 1100, or 1%. Each column of 10 is 110, or 10%.

A whole bar is 100% of something. Split it into 10 parts and each part is 10%. To turn a fraction into a percentage, make an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 10 or 100.
